Doctor Who: 10 New Things They Can Do With Clara

8. Clara And The Tardis Have A Mutual Connection

Doctor Who Clara 2

Clara was responsible for the First Doctor picking the Type 1 / 40 Tardis (depending on which Doctor you watch) and as such she helped to forge the most substantial relationship in the Doctor's very long life. Of course, the Tardis may have also stolen the Doctor, if 'her' story from 'The Doctor's Wife' is anything to go by. Perhaps it's somewhere in the middle. Perhaps the Tardis directed Clara to direct the Doctor and Susan towards her. Either way, there is this connection between companion and Tardis that is rich for development. Series seven sort of touched upon this in 'The Rings of Akhaten' and 'Hide', where it wouldn't let Clara in. There was certainly some character to the travelling police box that wasn't there much before series 6/32. I would love to see how this translates moving forward. Would Clara grow to understand the inner workings of the Tardis better than the Doctor himself? That would certainly be a fun angle to take. River Song has already played on this. (The Tardis isn't supposed to make that iconic sound when it lands). Thinking back to many episodes (Nu Who and Classic). Did it look like the Doctor was tinkering with the gadgets and hoping for the best rather than flying the ship with confidence? Having a jealous Doctor. An ever-expanding character in the Tardis. And a Clara with purpose and skill, continuing to make her invaluable to the Doctor. It wouldn't be in your face as something like the DoctorDonna (though I enjoyed that little plot line too) but build on the potential this dynamic character promised us in series seven.
