9. The Daleks
Potentially the most famous name in Doctor Who. More famous than the Doctor? Heres why. If you ask a number of none Doctor Who fans who the main character in Doctor Who is, they will tell you its Doctor Who. (Thats not his name! No! Not his name! Stop! Bad human!) but if you ask those same fans who the main bad guy is, they will generally tell you its the Daleks. This is why - when the show was announced to return - so many viewers were anxious to know if the Daleks would be returning as well. In fact, it is well known that the BBC did not even possess the rights to use the Daleks when they wrote the episode Dalek and an alternative script had to be written with an entirely new monster, just in case the Doctors oldest enemy would not return (which, for those who dont know, later became The Toclafane). It was a spine tingling moment during the sixth episode of the first series when the Doctor finally encounters the last of the Daleks. His polar opposite and the last of its kind. The Doctors fury was clear for all to see but for fans it was a moment of unequivocal joy. The plunger and eye stalk offered a feeling of familiarity to both those returning fans and those who knew of the Daleks despite not being a fan before. It was a moment that will live on - the moment that the Doctors oldest enemy returned to our screens.
