Doctor Who: 10 Obscure Facts You Never Knew

4. Bill Nighy Could Have Been The Doctor

Bill Nighy Rather interesting this one. In an interview in 2011, Nighy said that he had been offered the role but couldn€™t say when. Back in 2004 The Sun €œreported€ (I use the term loosely when in conjunction with The Sun) that Nighy was on the shortlist for the part of the Ninth Doctor which eventually went to Christopher Eccleston. Interestingly, if you read Moffat€™s interviews from around the time he became executive producer, he quite often said that he wanted €œan older Doctor€. However, the next thing we know, he changed his mind and young is in with Matt Smith being the youngest Doctor yet. It could be suggested that Moffat offered Nighy the job but he turned it down. Of course, this is all speculation. Nighy eventually did appear in the show in Richard Curtis€™s 2010 story Vincent and The Doctor alongside the new Doctor, Matt Smith.
