Doctor Who: 10 Reasons David Tennant Deserved His Special Recognition Award

3. He's A Proud Fanboy

Russell T Davies was the superfan who resurrected Doctor Who but Tennant became king of the fans by taking the keys to the TARDIS. It was the show which inspired him to act and now he€™d gone full circle in a truly brain-boggling way. He hadn€™t just had his cake and eaten it, he€™d gone on to steal the recipe and set up his own franchise, too. He inserted himself into the brand in the past, appearing vocally in the Richard E Grant Flash-tacular Scream of the Shalka, and he didn't wait to be asked, either. He just heard they were recording it and wangled himself a small role as a Caretaker. Audio custodians Big Finish Productions also played host to the future Time Lord by casting him in an adaptation of cult comic book The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, and of course various Gallifrey-inspired offerings along the way. This factor alone makes him unique in the history of television, being the first case of a series that has been absorbed so much into the culture you can aspire to be part of it as it rolls on through the decades. It was akin to the dreams of being a footballer, or wanting to impress Simon Cowell, and showed how the post-2005 Who was a bonafide part of British society.
