Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Matt Smith's Departure Is A Major Mistake

5. His Chemistry With River Song

River Song The Eleventh Doctor is defined as much by the supporting characters as the stories themselves. And with River Song (love or hate her-I love her!) there has been some true magic on screen. It€™s been a joy to watch their relationship unfold over the course of his tenure as Doctor. From the awkward €˜she knows more than he does€™ in series 5, to that first/last kiss in Day Of The Moon. It came a little serious as series 6 went on, and maybe River lost a little something when her mystery vanished, but the tangled, tragic relationship continued apace. Giving her regenerations to save his life in Let€™s Kill Hitler was a real defining moment for these two and while the wedding in the series 6 finale was a momentous event, for me it was the series 7 finale The Name Of The Doctor that finally cemented their relationship we were always supposed to believe they had. Stripping back the tiptoeing and energy of other events, it was the moment the Doctor admits it would have been too hard for him to say goodbye that summed up three years of the River Song / Doctor love story. That kiss between them felt genuine€almost a goodbye of sorts, the pivotal moment when we realise that River is a critical part of the Doctor€™s life. And unless she€™s back in the 50th or the Christmas special€that is it for these two. Sure River can come back in series 8 (and I hope she does), but we won€™t get to witness that chemistry that Matt Smith and Alex Kingston portray in their current roles. That in itself is a big loss for Doctor Who.
