Doctor Who: 10 Revived Series Episodes You'll Only Watch Once
8. The Lodger
This Series 5 episode is noted for introducing James Corden as the aforementioned Craig Owens who has since become one of the show's most popular 'companions who never were'. Apart from that, though, it basically just served as an excuse for Matt Smith to play football. If you didn't already know, Matt trained as a footballer before a back injury forced him to reevaluate his career prospects and as such he's got a nifty trick or two up his sleeve when it comes to handling a ball. It was only a matter of time before he got to show off his skillage in Doctor Who and if it had to happen in any episode, let's just be thankful it was this one. After all, if the Eleventh Doctor kicking a football about is the only thing you remember, it's probably not worth writing home about this one. What's more, the Doctor attempted to act like an "ordinary bloke" during his stint as The Lodger and the consequences were (probably) hilarious. Amy Pond, meanwhile, was stuck inside the TARDIS doing all she could to help solve the mystery of the man upstairs. And she ended up doing a lot more than him in the end. The Doctor was far too busy canoodling in the shower and messing around with electronic toothbrushes (no, not that sort of messing around...) to do anything productive and while it probably satisfied a certain demographic to see Matt Smith wearing nothing more than a towel, it didn't really contribute anything to the story, did it? The whole escapade finally gave Craig the courage to confess his underling love to his roommate in the end, though, so there's always that. You don't need to sit through it again to realise it's still a better love story than Twilight.
