Doctor Who: 10 Things Russell T. Davies NEEDS To Do

4. More Diversity

Doctor Who Series 13 Mandip Gill, Jodie Whittaker, John Bishop
BBC

Doctor Who has made great strides in its time toward showcasing diversity. Davies himself famously made everyone in space either Welsh or Bisexual, with Moffat and Chibnall continuing to depict LGBTQ characters, people of colour, different ethnicities and beliefs.

Davies' return may signal one of two things. First, it shows that the BBC is looking to go back to what helped the show relaunch back in 2005. However, it could also be seen as a hard-turn away from some of the ideas that Chibnall instigated. While it remains to be seen what will happen in the fallout from The Timeless Child, this writer believes that one thing Davies shouldn't do is recast Jodie Whittaker with a male-identifying actor.

The reason behind this is simple: if Davies has been called back to fix some of Chibnall's decisions, then changing the Doctor back to a male appearance might easily be seen as the BBC admitting that casting Whittaker was a mistake, which it very clearly wasn't. Now that this door has been opened, it bears further exploration, so for this writer, having the Doctor played by an actor who identifies as female or non-binary is the only step forward, at least for this next incarnation.
