Doctor Who: 10 Things To Expect From Chibnall's First Series
10. A Return To Basics
Russell T Davies kept his plates continuously spinning with a new and exciting mystery each series - from Harold Saxon to Bad Wolf - but the themes of them largely existed in isolation from the next. Moffat changed that with multi-series themes like Trenzalore, the Silence, and the return of Gallifrey having a huge impact on the Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors. While the payoff was largely thrilling there were moments that left audience's scratching their heads and more than one compliant that it was too complicated. Personally I don't feel that it was, but there is no denying that Moffat weaved a tangled web of stories over the course of his six years as showrunner, and his next will likely involve the tying up of loose threads. But with a new showrunner comes the dusting away of the cobwebs so to speak; with Doctor Who out to attract new audiences to maintain its popularity and draw back those Moffat-haters who abandoned the show, expect things to be refreshingly simple. Chibnall is sure to have a running mystery at play (more on that in a bit), but expect it to be largely the Doctor and his companion(s) having fun travelling through time and space as they go from one exciting adventure after another.
A writer for Whatculture since May 2013, I also write for TheRichest.com and am the TV editor and writer for Thedigitalfix.com . I wrote two plays for the Greater Manchester Horror Fringe in 2013, the first an adaption of Simon Clark's 'Swallowing A Dirty Seed' and my own original sci-fi horror play 'Centurion', which had an 8/10* review from Starburst magazine! I aim to achieve my goal for writing for television (and get my novels published) but in the meantime I'll continue to write about those TV shows I love!
