Doctor Who: 10 Things You Never Knew About Series 2 Of NuWho

6. New Earth Was Doomed

New Earth holds a special place in many a Whovian heart. It marked the beginning of the Tenth Doctor's acclaimed first series (he had, of course, just made his official debut in The Christmas Invasion, but it doesn't really count because he spent the entire episode snoozing!) and it also gave the show's stars the rare chance to flex their comedic muscles. Look, for all of the haters who claim that the episode is just one more of Rose's buttons popping off - *ahem* - away from being an unbearable cringefest, Russell T Davies has openly admitted that the entire purpose of the story was to give David and Billie the opportunity to be funny, so it's not like they weren't aware that the premise was straying away from the norm. Besides, the return of Zoƫ Wanamaker as Lady Cassandra paved the way for some hilariously memorable performances (who could forget Billie bouncing up down in front of the mirror, David rolling his eyes and that kiss...?) but there was also an interesting plot which presented an interesting underlying moral dilemma. You might be surprised to hear, though, that the action behind the scenes was just as turbulent - if not even more so - as the on screen escapades of our beloved heroes. Originally titled Body Swap (and then remained to The Sunshine Camp), the episode famously went over schedule and over budget as filming was repeatedly delayed due to extreme weather conditions. That's the South Wales climate for you! Filmed concurrently with The Christmas Invasion, the constant reshoots proved to be particularly nightmarish for the make up department who were forced to switch between Billie's shorter bob and the hair extensions that she had sported in the previous episode. Mistakes are always bound to happen, of course, and if you look very carefully (that is, if you can peel your eyes away from another of Billie's... assets), the length of her hair is continuously changing throughout the course of the episode. It's short at the start, slightly longer in the middle, shorter again and then in the final scene they seemingly gave up and settled with putting her extensions up in a bun. Don't worry, your secret is safe with us!
