1. What's In A Name?
There isnt a fan across the land who doesnt know that the Doctor is from a planet called Gallifrey in the constellation of Kasterborous (and if youre only just discovering this, shame on you!) but it took the revived series over two series to actually acknowledge its name on screen. Our beloved Time Lord hadn't been keeping new viewers completely in the dark about his origins up to this point, however. It didnt take them long to work out that his home world - along with the rest of his entire race - had been destroyed during the Time War but it wasnt until the 2006 Christmas Special, The Runaway Bride (which technically does count as Series 3, before you get all uppity in the comments!), that he uttered the immortal word that Classic Series fans had been waiting for. Gallifrey. During a climactic showdown with the Empress of the Racnoss underneath the Thames (because where else would a giant alien spider do her evil bidding?), viewers were given their first NuWho insight into just how dark the Doctor can be. He was a Time Lord and he was serious business. It was an unexpected but now beloved moment in which both old and new fans rejoiced. It's just as well really, too, seeing as Gallifrey went onto play a significant part in the Series 3 finale with the aforementioned return of the Master. It's almost as if the whole thing was planned... What did you think of this list? Are there any other mind blowing facts about Series 3 of NuWho that should have been included? Share them in the comments section below, and stayed for our Series 4 retrospective, coming soon!
