10. Three Christmas Specials

And a partridge in a pear tree! Series 7 of Doctor Who followed the pattern set by the previous series, in which only half the season was shown, with a small break, followed by the second half of the season. However, Series 7 had it's mid-series break just before Christmas which allowed Steven Moffat to give Matt Smith two Christmas specials on his final season, as well as one that appeared as a prequel to the series itself. The first special is set during World War II and works as a re-introduction to Amy and Rory who had been separated from the Doctor for the better part of two years whilst he travelled alone. The second special re-introduced Clara Oswald (this time as Clara Oswin Oswald, instead of just Oswin Oswald like in Asylum of the Daleks) while the Doctor was mourning the loss of the Ponds in Victorian London. While the Doctor is prepared to take her along as a companion, she dies (again!) prior to officially joining him. Noticing that her tombstone reads 'Clara Oswin Oswald', he recalls the other version of her he met which snaps him out of his depression as he embarks on a personal mission to discover the mystery of the impossible girl. The third and final Christmas Special for Matt Smith in Series 7 was a truly fitting regeneration story, which allowed the mythos of Doctor Who to continue on for years, due to the new cycle of regenerations bestowed upon the Doctor by the Time Lords. But let's not get ahead of ourselves...
