Doctor Who: 10 Things You Never Knew About The Day Of The Doctor

8. It Acknowledged The Very First Episode

The 50th anniversary couldn't go by without the show paying some sort of tribute to its very first episode, An Unearthly Child. Without that pivotal first installment, viewers never would have gotten to know the Doctor, and the world would be a much poorer, less exciting place without the chance to explore time and space with our favorite Time Lord. Right from the start, The Day of the Doctor paid tribute to An Unearthly Child in a myriad of ways. Some were obvious, such as using the original 1963 opening title sequence, the policeman patrolling Totter's Lane, and Coal Hill School, especially the headmaster I. Chesterton. But there were some more subtle nods as well. For instance, when The Day of the Doctor opened, school was dismissing for the day just like at the beginning of An Unearthly Child. Clara was now a teacher at Coal Hill just like the first companions Ian and Barbara. Finally, the clock that Clara passed on her motorcycle was displaying 5:17, the same time that An Unearthly Child premiered on November 23, 1963. Little touches like this really added a nice touch to the 50th anniversary celebrations; they gave us a chance to look back and realize how far the show had come.
