7. All You Can Eat Buffet
Some would say that Torchwood's first series got off to somewhat of a rocky start but by the time it reached its epic finale, there really was no holding back. In fact, the drama escalated so quickly that it wasn't long before Jack was facing his End of Days - the clue was in the title - and as heroic deaths go, this one was pretty momentous. When the Beast's son Abaddon - also known as the Great Devourer, but that's only when he's really showing off - escaped the confines of Cardiff's time rift and sought to massacre the human race using only his fateful shadow (again, you couldn't make it up!), it was up to Jack to save Earth by exposing his immortality to the creature's life-draining power. Luckily there was only so much life that Abaddon could physically consume and as Jack himself pointed out in what he - and us - thought would be his final moments, he was an all you could eat buffet. Something tells us he's said that before. Not even a demon could keep the good ol' Captain down, though, and after a prolonged recovery - he had just had his entire life sucked out of him so he deserved a rest - he was back to his former glory. He even forgave Owen for shooting him, too, so he's a pretty good good egg all round.
