3. Getting Out
Life with the Doctor is turbulent enough at the very best of times (just ask Amy Pond!) but it was even more difficult for Martha Jones who was forced to spend the majority of her initial TARDIS tenure trying to desperately escape the shadow of her persistent predecessor. Look. Nobody said that stepping into the shoes of Rose Tyler was going to be easy but the process of constantly being lumbered with the title of 'second best' proved to be too much for Martha in the end when she decided to call it a day after the Earth-shattering events of the climactic Series 3 finale. And who can really blame her? In fact, most of us were surprised that she managed to put up with the Doctor's dismissive behaviour as long as she did. Still, she had just single handedly walked the entire Earth, so at least she went out on a high. Her family needed her, too, which affirmed that her priorities were still intact. It's just unfortunate that the same couldn't be said for the Doctor, really, but Martha confirmed that she was never going to let a man - Time Lord or not - define her when she decided to take matters in her own hands and give her story of unrequited love the happy ending it deserved. This was her, getting out.
