Doctor Who: 10 Unanswered Questions From The Revived Series

8. Who Was The Woman In The End Of Time?

Isn't it obvious? She was Claire Bloom! Narratively speaking, though, fans never really found out who the hell she when she kept popping up all over the show during the Tenth Doctor's swansong in The End of Time. It's fairly obvious who she was meant to be, of course, but apparently that's just not good enough, is it? She was definitely a Time Lady anyway. That much was made clear. She opposed Rassilon's plan to destroy time (seriously, what sort of person would support that?) and was subsequently forced to stand behind him with her hands over her face - as "a monument of her shame" - when the Time Lords returned to Earth. The Doctor himself caught her eye during his climactic showdown with destiny and, while their interaction was only short but sweet, their faces said it all. She had previously been appearing to Wilfred Mott as an ominous figure dressed in white (she even tuned into his telly at one point) and there's surely only one person in the entire universe who would embark on such timey-wimey means to protect the Doctor? If you still haven't put the pieces together, let us break it to you gently... She was River Song! Not really, but unsurprisingly that theory is one of many that's been doing the rounds. She was actually the Doctor's mum (though at this point it wouldn't even be that much of a surprise if River turned out to be the occupier of that role, too) who haunted Wilf to point him in the right direction, shamed the Time Lords, inspired her son to do the right thing and ended up being sent "back into hell" in time for tea. It still doesn't make any sense, of course, but it's still something to think about.
