Doctor Who: 10 Villains The Doctor Couldn't Defeat

9. The Midnight Monster (Midnight)

Midnight is a rare episode of Doctor Who in that the villain had the Doctor well and truly beaten, without a hope of survival.

After boarding a shuttle to go on a tour of the planet Midnight, the Doctor is left paralysed by a mysterious, unseen creature that steals his voice. This creature - while possessing the body of a tourist, Sky Silvestry - then instructs the other passengers to throw the Doctor out of the shuttle, which would vaporise him instantly.

But in the end, this doesn't happen, because the hostess realises that the Doctor is a helpless victim who the real villain, Sky, is trying to destroy. The hostess - in a truly courageous move - then drags Sky out of the shuttle, killing them both.

So while the Midnight entity was defeated at the end of the episode (or was it?), this wasn't the Doctor's doing. In fact, if not for the bravery of the hostess, the Doctor would've been thrown out of the shuttle and vaporised himself.

Or, to put it another way, the Midnight entity absolutely wiped the floor with him.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
