Doctor Who: 11 Cool Details We Just Learned About Vincent And The Doctor

5. The Church Appeared In A Few Other Episodes

While a good chunk of the episode was shot in Trogir, Croatia (which also doubled for Venice in prior episode The Vampires Of Venice), certain sequences and shots were picked up in other, less exotic locations.

An example of this is the church that Vincent paints. The outdoor shots of him working his magic while the Doctor grumbles and complains were filmed at Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff, Wales, and as pointed out by Gillan in a tweet, Vincent and the Doctor wasn't the only time that this building has been used for Doctor Who.

The cathedral's gate was seen in Series 3 episode The Family Of Blood - during the quick scene where "John Smith" and Joan get married - while a neighbouring road was used in The Eleventh Hour for a conversation between Amy and the Doctor (here's a still - that's the cathedral in the background).

As for the episodes that Gillan is actually referring to in her tweet, she appears to be talking about the scenes set inside the church - the ones where the Doctor, Amy and Vincent battle (and ultimately defeat) the Krafayis.

The sequence where the monster chases the trio through two dark rooms connected by a wooden door was filmed at Neath Abbey (situated just a few miles away from Swansea, Wales), which, as Gillan rightly stated, is a location that also appeared in Series 5's second episode, The Beast Below.

In this story, Neath Abbey doubled as the dungeon room for the climactic scene where Amy frees the Star Whale. If you look closely, you can see that the characters actually enter this room via the same wooden door seen in Vincent and the Doctor.

And finally, Neath Abbey did pop up in the other episode that Gillan mentioned, Series 7's The Power Of Three (or, "the episode with all the cubes", as she put it).

In this story, it doubled as the UNIT laboratory where the cubes were being tested.

Llandaff Cathedral and Neath Abbey have been used in other Doctor Who episodes too, so keep your eyes peeled the next time you do a rewatch!

He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
