Doctor Who: 11 Reasons We Love Matt Smith (And The Eleventh Doctor)
2. Evolving Character
From one series to the next... Hell from one episode to the next Matt Smith can alter his performance to show the progression of the Doctor' character. For those of you crying 'Bad Actor', 'Bad Director' or the like I'm inclined to disagree with you most respectively based on the fact that it is done so methodically. We first meet the Eleventh Doctor in one of his post regenerative personality crises. He goes through, in the first series a whole range of moods and characteristics from the exceptionally cruel of 'Time of Angels' to the exceptionally bizarre in 'The Lodger'.
Further subtle alterations come over the course of series 6. A particularly dark series in which he discovers that he must die come the final episode. We first get to see a subtly darker Doctor with less childish enthusiasm who is later contrasted noticeably by his younger, younger, pre-death version. The difference is only noticeable once you know what the story is there but once you see it, it is undeniably being played by Matt. A testament to the acting skills of our Doctor.
