Doctor Who: 12 Great Big Finish Stories You Have To Listen To

8. Love And War

A recent development by the company is to produce audio adaptations of much loved Doctor Who novels. Love and War, released in 2012, celebrated 20 years since the creation of Benny Summerfield, the character that launched the company and still played by Lisa Bowerman. The novel was considered an important one back in 1992 as the show was off air and these novels - from Virgin Publishing - were seen by fans as the official continuation.

The audio, adapted by Jac Rayner, is a faithful version and recreates the style of these New Adventures. Original writer Paul Cornell was the most important voice of these novels and got his writing break on NuWho (Father's Day, Human Nature/The Family of Blood) on the strength of these novels. The tales have dated a little and can be over-earnest but they carry on the direction the show was going towards in its final years. Bowerman is as charming as ever and makes a great companion for the Seventh Doctor.

These novel adaptations continue to be popular with books from TV writers Gareth Roberts and Russell T Davies also being turned into audio plays. They're a great way to get the flavour of the Virgin line if one missed them in their heyday.
