Doctor Who: 13 Cool Details Steven Moffat Just Revealed About The Girl In The Fireplace

3. ...And Instead, Here's How The Scene Almost Played Out

In both the final and alternate versions of the ballroom scene, the setup is the same. The clockwork droids attack and force Reinette to her knees, before the sound of a galloping horse starts to bounce around the room.

At this point though, the two versions diverge. In the alternate, unused version, the Doctor doesn't ride a horse through the mirror - he jumps through the mirror himself.

"Arse over tit" is the way Moffat's script puts it.

When he lands in the ballroom, he gets to his feet and becomes confused for a moment or two, mistaking Reinette for a man called Monsieur Voltaire. At this point - after slapping the back of his neck - he returns to his normal, Doctor-y self.

But that's not all. If the scene had played out this way, the horse would've been left on the ship, so Moffat had to address that loose end with more alternate script pages. To that end, he wrote a version of the ending where Rose says that the horse needs to be dropped off in a random field. Problem solved!

Oh, and there's also a jab at Mickey, as is customary for most episodes he's in.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
