As the creator, writer and lead performer, Michaela Coel can no doubt expect television commissioners to be biting her hand off for her next project. So, why would such an in-demand writer and actor give up creative control to star in someone else's project? Well, Marvel money is probably very persuasive, which is why we can expect to see her in the next Black Panther film, but Doctor Who? Not high up on her list.

Coel herself responded to rumours back in September by saying: "I never say never to anything. I guess that's my answer". Reading between the lines, that's the sort of polite "No" that has been suggested by an actor's agent to keep her name and her potential casting as the Doctor in the headlines.
