Doctor Who: 15 Greatest NuWho Deaths So Far

9. Toby/The Beast (The Satan Pit)

Doctor Who Osgood
BBC

Sometimes a death scene comes across as epic instead of tragic or satisfying. The expiration of Toby Zed, by this point completely posessed by the Beast (who may or may not be the creature devil myths are based on within the Whoniverse), is an example of this category. The creature itself has tricked both the humans and the Doctor, letting its mind escape from its eternal prison while its body waits to fall into a black hole. It has taken over Toby Zed and is on the way to escape into civilisation.

However, the Doctor breaks its prison to send the planet it's trapped on hurtling into the aforementioned black hole, and the Beast reveals itself to the travellers escaping on the rocket. Rune marks pop up all across Toby's skin and he starts to breathe fire and rant about how powerful he is. It's creepy and threatening, and ramps the tension sky-high. Then Rose shoots out the window, undoes Toby's seatbelt and he goes hurtling into space.

If an awesome companion moment wasn't enough to make this a great death, it's also fantastically shot. The scene with Toby flying out into space, roaring and screaming, is actually brilliant visually and completely fitting for the demise of such an imposing villain.
