Doctor Who has given us its fair share of love stories in its time but what about the ones who aren't so lucky? Such was the case for Joan Redfern in this universally praised Series 3 two-parter when she gave her heart to John Smith. The only problem was, John was actually the Doctor in a human disguise and it was all destined to end in tears when he inevitably returned to his former Time Lord glory. Just to kick her when she was down, they were shown a dream-like sequence of the life they could've had together. The greatest love story never told.
