23. The Gollum Doctor

Many fans are still reeling from the CGI monstrosity that was the super-aged Doctor in Series 3's Last of the Time Lords. Apparently, this is the Doctor once his regenerations have been stripped away or something, so the Time Lord is reduced to a wizened midget after getting a dose of the Master's laser screwdriver aging ray. This special effect would have stretched the budget of a feature film let alone a BBC budget and one has to wonder if Russell T Davies wrote the episode after an evening on the old Merlot. Imagine if the budget had been bigger? Could it have been a Gollum Doc vs. Master fight akin to the Yoda and Count Dooku one from Attack of the Clones?! Alas, what viewers really got is a really rubbish cartoon gnome in a parrot cage who also seems to be a dab hand with the old needle and thread (or did the Master run up that mini-costume for him?). It feels like some bizarre fever dream.
