Doctor Who: 30 NuWho Characters Who Would've Made Fantastic Full-Time Companions

4. River Song

Doctor Who Blink
BBC Studios

Appeared in: Various (Series 4, 5, 6, & 7), & The Husbands Of River Song.

Some things are best left to the imagination - why ruin something enigmatically sacrosanct for ruinous exposition? We've seen this done too many times in films.

Before River Song sacrifices herself in Forest of the Dead, she opens her heart to the Doctor. It was heartbreaking, yet left us in wonder:

"Funny thing is, this means you've always known how I was going to die. All the time we've been together, you knew I was coming here. The last time I saw you, the real you, the future you, I mean, you turned up on my doorstep, with a new haircut and a suit. You took me to Darillium to see the Singing Towers. What a night that was. The Towers sang, and you cried. You wouldn't tell me why, but I suppose you knew it was time. My time. Time to come to the library. You even gave me your screwdriver. That should have been a clue."

Thankfully, however, the 2015 Christmas Special provided us the pitch-perfect translation of the above. Peter Capaldi's Doctor is simply the best husband for River Song; they would've made the ultimate TARDIS team:

“...with Peter it's very different because he’s much more focused. He’s just so funny with the faces he pulls on-screen. He’s one of those actors that when you’re actually working next to him you don’t actually see it. He’s brilliant to watch.”

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
