Doctor Who: 5 Most Intriguing Stories That Were Never Made

1. Doctor Who Meets Scratchman

Scratchman 3 Despite the tantalising ideas of a JK Rowling world, the Master as the Doctor's brother and an alien-busting Rose Tyler, the most intriguing Doctor Who story that never was must surely be the bonkers, brilliant Doctor Who Meets Scratchman. During filming breaks, Tom Baker and Ian Marter (who played companion Harry Sullivan) dreamt up their idea for a Doctor Who film called Doctor Who Meets Scratchman (or Doctor Who and the Big Game). A big, ambitious storyline, it would have seen the Doctor, Sarah Jane and Harry encounter - wait for it - the Devil himself, known as Harry Scratch (the pair imagined horror veteran Vincent Price in the role) as well as an assortment of other villains including Daleks, Cybermen and scarecrows that come to live due to an alien fertiliser. The epic adventure would have come to a thrilling climax as the Doctor and his friends are trapped on a giant pinball table, with Daleks surrounding them, as well as Scratch shooting balls at them to try to knock them into the holes that are, in fact, portals to hell! I did warn you it was bonkers. Believing in their idea, Baker and Marter tried to get money behind their project but it sadly failed. Excited fans even donated a fair sum to get the film running but the pair were forced to return it when it all fell through. Somewhere out there is a very lucky parallel world that got to see the garish fruits of Baker and Marter's daydreams. For us, though, Doctor Who Meets Scratchman will go down as the maddest, most intriguing and all-round most fun-sounding unmade Doctor Who story ever.
