Doctor Who - 5 Russell T Davies Era Monsters That Should Return (& 5 That Shouldn't)

2. Shouldn't - The Midnight Entity

Doctor Who Midnight
BBC Studios

Midnight is perhaps one of the best Doctor Who episodes due to the fact the cast and crew were able to craft a frightening story with nothing but a small transport vehicle, and a handful of rather ordinary characters. You don't even see the monster that is terrorising the tourists, instead it possesses the passengers and mimics everything they say.

Part of the horror of this episode is just how quickly the passengers turn on one another to try and protect themselves. It can be assumed that the creature is native to Midnight, but everything other than what we explicitly see in the episode is left to mystery.

So really, it should stay that way. Sure, the writers could explore the truth of the monster on a different planet, using its creepy abilities in different contexts, but it runs the risk of ruining the legacy of the monster. It would be like when viewers saw the Weeping Angels move in Flesh and Stone, and a part of their magic was lost.

Sometimes a stand-alone adventure should just stay as a stand-alone. How often does The Doctor have no idea what he's up against? It's just too special to ruin.
