Doctor Who: 50 Greatest Ever Stories

44. Survival (Seventh Doctor)

Doctor_Who__Survival An ironic title, seeing as this was the last Doctor Who story from the original run of the series (sniff). The story begins with the Doctor taking his companion Ace back to her hometown, but something seems off. They learn of a string of mysterious disappearances, all somehow relating to a black cat wandering around. It turns out the cat is being controlled by someone in a different world, using the cat as his eyes and picking out people to transport back to him. The Doctor and Ace follow soon enough, and get caught in a battle, all while the planet breaks apart around them. The story was indeed a fitting conclusion to the series, especially with Sylvester McCoy's immortal voiceover at the end.... "There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, and the sea's asleep, and the rivers dream. People made of smoke, and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there€™s injustice, and somewhere else the tea's getting cold. Come on, Ace €” we€™ve got work to do!"

43. Dalek (Ninth Doctor)

dalek in chains So, 2005 had finally come around. We finally had a recurring, weekly Doctor Who series on our screens again. Small kink though... we learn early on that the Doctor is the... wait, the last of the Time Lords? What, so no Master or Romana or visits to Gallifrey again? How dare they! Well, at least there will still be the good ol' Dal- WHAT?! They got rid of them too?! What good is this show? Fine, I thought. I'll watch one last episode, and that'll be IT. Which was this episode. We learn a space junk collector has a piece deep down in a bunker that's the pride of his collection. He sends the Doctor down to see if he knows what it is. He walks into a darkened room, and sees the above pic. Ahhh, so they do have Daleks in this new show! Of course, the Dalek breaks free and wreaks havoc for forty minutes before it's stopped. But that wasn't the best part of this episode. This may be the only 100% good Dalek episode of the new series, because it wasn't massive armies of Daleks seconds away from destroying the Earth. This was one Dalek vs. one Doctor, and we got to see the fear in his eyes when he realized what he was up against. Not only that, it gave us hope that this series could equal or even better the cla- wait, did they just kill the Dalek? The last Dalek, and you killed it??!! And thus I did not watch the new series again for four more years.
