One of the first things that Steven Moffat tried to do when he took the reins of the show from Russell T Davies was give the Daleks "a new lease of life". He gave Mark Gatiss an episode set in World War Two which was designed to launch a new wave of Daleks, which sparked fan interest. What imaginative ideas would the Moff bring to the Doctor’s archenemies, then?

Then the New Paradigm appeared to huge crushes of criticism. Their look was the main thing that fans complained about. It was described as being too plastic and the colours used were far too bright to instill any real sense of menace. Furthermore, there was a bizarre lump sticking out of the backs of the new Daleks, which made them look hunched and diluted their iconic shape. A lot of long term Whovians felt that they had been designed to sell more toys, rather than because they needed a change. They quickly picked up a number of derivative nicknames, starting with “Rainbow Daleks” and spiralling downwards.

They weren’t helped by the episode they were in, either. The story felt rushed and, while the Daleks did technically beat the Doctor and escape to rebuild their race, the ending struck a number of viewers as being anticlimactic.

However, there’s another huge disappointment surrounding the New Paradigm Daleks...
