Doctor Who: 6 Biggest Dalek Disappointments Of The New Series
4. The New Paradigm Not Being Used To Their Full Potential
This may seem odd following the last entry, but there is an argument here. The backlash over the new Daleks' look led to them being sidelined. Even after being tweaked to lessen the hump at the back, and even after they were given a metallic paint job that looked a whole lot better, the creative team decided to go back to the chrome Daleks that fans were familiar with.
Which sounds like a good idea, given that fans didn't really seem to like them. However, there was a reason behind the redesign. Moffat and Gatiss decided that each colour of Dalek had a different role, either Supreme, Scientist, Strategist, Eternal or Drone. Listening to interviews from around the time, they were planning a whole host of different Dalek stories involving the different types of Dalek. The Doctor could have to face one Scientist, thousands of drones or have to figure out just what on Earth an Eternal Dalek was. This would have led to a series of adventures, each different from the last, that could have made the Daleks' frequent appearances feel fresh and vibrant instead of stale and predictable.
Given the complaints about them being used every season, that variety is needed now more than ever. And the potential was there but never used, which is a crying shame.
