Doctor Who: 6 Biggest Dalek Disappointments Of The New Series

3. The "Human" Dalek

If the design of the Dalek Paradigm was bad, it was nothing on the Human Dalek in Series 3's Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks two-parter. Dalek Sec absorbed a dodgy New York businessman in order to create a new series. The two emerged as a combination of human and Dalek, formed through prosthetics that a lot of fans were disappointed by.

A number of viewers also felt that the plotline was a bit too silly and didn't really capture the essence of the Daleks properly. What's more, the character gradually losing any ability to influence the plot didn't help him stand out over his wobbling New York accent. The destruction of the Cult of Skaro, a team of Daleks created especially to outthink their enemies, also didn't help proceedings, as they managed to capture a sense of imaginative mythos in their appearance in the Series 2 finale. Here, they go out with a damp squib.

What makes everything more disappointing, however, is that there were good ideas at play here. The challenge to the Daleks' philosophy from one of their own kind could have been really interesting, as could a new species of Dalek that the Doctor could trust. However, the execution was off, and the themes have been explored more effectively in Series 1's Dalek and Series 8's Into the Dalek.
