Doctor Who: 6 Reasons Why It's Time For A Female Doctor

3. It's Something New

Doctor Who’s ratings are not as good as they used to be a few years ago. This most recent series so far has seen 6 episodes under 6 million and only 1 episode over 6 million. Compared to the third and final seasons of Matt Smith and David Tennant’s series, featured episodes never dropped below 6 million viewers. Part of the reason for this is the rise of streaming and VOD, but still, the ratings have dropped in the UK.

A new, female Doctor would clearly cause a large amount of eyeballs to sit in front of the telly and be a great publicity stunt. Is there anything wrong with a publicity stunt? No. Doctor Who has been playing with publicity stunts for decades. Doctor Who cast Eric Roberts in the TV Movie to up appeal, as did they cast Billie Piper (a pop star turned brilliant actress) as the first companion of the revival, and Kylie Minogue for Voyage of the Damned.

Doctor Who has also played to the press with tons of covers on Radio Times and other magazines, so a female Doctor press campaign would be nothing new and actually worthwhile for women getting their fair share of publicity.

Bill Medley really likes television, movies, and music. He writes about some of them.
