Doctor Who 60th Anniversary: Predicting Chances Of Every Doctor Returning

3. The Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi)

Peter Capaldi might be the biggest Doctor Who fan on this list, but in recent years, he's actually downplayed the idea of returning for a multi-Doctor special:

"I wouldn't really fancy that. There are so many Doctors now... I'm quite happy with what I did, you know, I loved my time on Doctor Who, but I think the more multi-Doctor stories you have, the less effective they are."

He could be bluffing of course, but if that was his game plan, then a simple "I'm not sure" would be infinitely better than a straight-up denial. His remarks seem genuine, which obviously reduces the chances of him returning for the 60th a great deal.

But again, people can change their minds. And given the opportunity, would Capaldi really say no to working with a Doctor Who powerhouse like RTD? Especially if Smith and Tennant are also involved, and the paycheque is fat enough.

The Twelfth Doctor has also grown in appreciation since his 2017 regeneration, and given that Capaldi made his debut in the previous anniversary special in 2013, there's something poetic about bringing things full-circle with the 60th anniversary in 2023.

Admittedly, this is mostly wishful thinking, but we're giving Capaldi a fighting chance.

Chances: 5/10.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
