Doctor Who: 8 Best Jodie Whittaker Episodes
7. War Of The Sontarans (2021)
As the first serial of the modern era, Doctor Who: Flux was an ambitious and intriguing project, and although its overarching plot proved unsatisfying in the long run, the six-part series did offer a couple of exceptional adventures.
War of the Sontarans was the second episode of Whittaker's final season, and it's safe to say Whovians were impressed with it overall. Within the episode, the Doctor, Yaz, and Dan are split up, resulting in three separate storylines - and surprisingly for a Chibnall-era episode, all three stories were engaging and beneficial to the plot. The most notable storyline was Dan's, in which we met his hilarious parents in a post-apocalyptic Liverpool ruled over by the sinister Sontarans (somewhat reminiscent of Back to the Future Part II).
Another impressive element of the episode was its huge scope, from the Crimean battlefield, to the Temple of Atropos, and the apocalyptic Liverpool. Instead of losing its edge to a broad range of locations (which can be typical for a Chibnall episode), each location offered a purpose, ultimately merging to serve the context of the final scene.
Despite Flux's overall shortcomings, War of the Sontarans displays the series' strongest elements in their complete form, which is a huge plus!
