Doctor Who: 8 Best Jodie Whittaker Episodes
1. The Haunting Of Villa Diodati (2020)
Offering an incredibly ominous mood, The Haunting Of Villa Diodati ranks number one among Whittaker's best episodes.
Written by Maxine Alderton, the Doctor and the TARDIS team arrive at Villa Diodati in 1816, the night that Mary Shelley's household story Frankenstein was inspired by. Within the stormy night of the episode, we encounter ghostly frights, trippy illusions, and one familiar foe - the Lone Cyberman.
Not only was the entrance of the Lone Cyberman spectacular, but the new, updated design of this legendary enemy is one of the best seen in the modern era thus far. This episode's stakes provided a terrific Whittaker adventure, elevated by the best scriptwriting of Thirteen's entire run. This is apparent in Whittaker's speech to her companions near the end of the episode, which stands as the most memorable monologue delivered by her Doctor:
"You want to sacrifice yourself for this? You want me to sacrifice you? You want to call it? Do it now. All of you [silence]. Yeah. Cos sometimes this team structure isn't flat. It's mountainous, with me at the summit, in the stratosphere, alone, left to choose."
The speech helped viewers discover a new tone of Whittaker's incarnation, because we never in a million years imagined that Thirteen would be scathing of her team's leadership structure.
While this episode acted as a set-up for a rather disappointing finale, The Haunting Of Villa Diodati remains the most excellent episode of Whittaker's run as the Doctor.
