Doctor Who: 8 Mistakes That Series 13 NEEDS To Fix
4. Bring Back Gallifrey
The decision by Russell T Davies’s to begin the revival with Gallifrey destroyed was a masterstroke. It gave the new Ninth Doctor a tragic backstory for the audience to uncover and acted as a poignant metaphor for the cancellation of the classic series.
Eight years later, Steven Moffat realised that all of the possible drama surrounding the Doctor being the last of their kind had been milked dry, and promptly returned Gallifrey to the show.
So, Chibnall inherited the series with the Time Lords now fully restored. With a chance to reintroduce the Doctor’s homeworld and her sometimes helpful, sometimes scheming people to a new audience. What would he do first?
He destroyed it again. Twice.
This point is pretty simple. Bring Gallifrey back. Bring the Time Lords back. We already know what the Doctor’s like when their home planet isn’t around and now we want to see how they clash with the infuriating bureaucracy that plagues the jewel of the seven systems.
Chibnall needs a Gallifrey set classic like The Deadly Assassin under his belt now more than ever, and a quick reversal of this destruction might well give him it.
