Doctor Who: 8 Reasons A Female Master Isn't The End Of The World

8. Michelle Gomez

One of the main reasons that the Master's regeneration into a female is one of the best things that's ever happened to the show is the fact that it's given them an excuse to utilise Michelle Gomez in a prominent role. Her involvement in the show could've gone down a very different route, though. Michelle was originally in discussions to guest as Ms Delphox in Time Heist but she had to back out due to other commitments. As you'll know, the role eventually went to Keeley Hawes and let's thank our lucky stars it did! Keeley was brilliant, to give credit where credit's due, and, while Michelle would've no doubt also shone in the role, now that fans have seen her as Missy it's safe to say she would've been tragically underused as the Karabraxos bank's ruthless head of security. Many fans would agree that Michelle's portrayal of the Master is the gift that keeps on giving which is no mean feat when you consider the fact she's so far only appeared in two full episodes. She's an incredibly talented comedy actress but she also brings an underlying sense of darkness to her performance which means her incarnation can send you into a fit of hysterics and screaming behind the sofa - sometimes even in the same sentence. Missy will be back in Series 9 later this year and forgive us for being presumptuous but you just know she'll be one of its stars.
