Doctor Who: 8 Unanswered Questions From The Thirteenth Doctor's Era

6. Why Did The Companions Feel So Distant?

The companions are one of the most appealing aspects of Doctor Who. These characters give us the illusion that we're travelling through time and space, as they represent our reactions to the universe's mysteries and chaos. Unfortunately, this hasn't been the case with Thirteen's TARDIS team.

Ryan, Graham, and Yaz (also known as "the fam") are the Thirteenth Doctor's main companions, and to put it bluntly, they're arguably the worst companions of the modern era.

Unlike previous companions like Rose, Donna, and Clara, none of the Thirteenth Doctor's mates ever question her decisions. Ryan, Graham, and Yaz are essentially the Doctor's travelling PR team, who applaud everything she does. As a result, this makes them even more unrealistic and difficult to relate to. Graham appears to be the only companion with some substance, whereas Ryan and Yaz are absolutely shallow, which is exacerbated by their soulless dynamic with the Doctor. The actors, who are all incredibly talented, are in no way to blame for this - instead, the direction and wooden dialogue are at fault.

Dan's character was a step up with his entrance in Series 13, yet he still felt like Graham's replacement. Every TARDIS team member had enormous potential, so it's incredibly disappointing that we never saw anything noteworthy come from them.
