2. Inferno (Story 054, 1970)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62j3wJpCR3k Astonishingly, Doctor Who hasnt played around much with alternate universes. They turn up all the time in shows like Star Trek, where by the Deep Space Nine era theres practically a super highway connecting the regular universe with the mirror universe. But in Who theyre a rare and splendid thing. In this story, the Doctor finds himself in such a universe; one where the UK is basically a dictatorship and Liz and the Brigadier are rather more evil versions of themselves (you can tell because she has black hair and hewell, is clean shaven, though he does get an eyepatch and a scar). Soon the Doctor is stuck trying to save our universe while being keenly aware that he probably cant save the other one, creating a truly great moment of ethical concern for the character. It is a bit silly when you have an enemy that can be beaten with fire extinguishers, but that one complaint aside, this is a hell of a great story.
