Doctor Who: 9 Great Third Doctor Stories

3. The Daemons (Story 059, 1971)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLe084pddBM So magic is a thing, apparently. Oh, it gets handwaved a bit in this story as more advanced science and such, but not severely so. No, it€™s full on magic that we see up on screen, and it works a lot better than it did in the Tenth Doctor€™s time, when the Master was brought back to life using his horcrux. Ahem. It's very much a non-science fiction story and very much more of a "dark fairy tale" type of story. In that way it's somewhat more like new Who, though not at all in a bad way. Speaking of the Master, yeah, he€™s in this one as Reverend Magister. Watching him trying to be all C of E on the one hand and sinister and evil on the other is quite entertaining. I also have to praise the unusually high production values and the really solid, dark nature of the story, which includes elements of neo-paganism, devil summoning, Maypoles and an actual, full-on, "The Satan Pit"-style demon summoned by the Master (as well as a remote control scheme for Bessie, the Doctor's prized yellow car). But let€™s be honest. There€™s only one real reason to love this episode, and that€™s that great line from the Brig!
