Doctor Who: 9 Things You Didn't Realise About Series 1 Of NuWho
3. Live Long And Prosper
Doctor Who fans would argue that their beloved series is the biggest and best of them... and they'd probably be right. The truth is, of course, that there's another formidable franchise out there that is just as universally beloved. The cult sensation in question is, of course, Star Trek, and NuWho took the opportunity to pay tribute to its fellow sci-fi brethren during The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances two-parter in 2005. After her initial encounter with the ever charismatic Jack Harkness, Rose Tyler asks the Ninth Doctor why he's so old fashioned in his approach and subsequently nicknames him 'Mr Spock' in reference to the iconic Star Trek captain. As a human/Vulcan hybrid, Spock's origins aren't actually that different to that of the Doctor's, but let's save that particular discussion for another rainy day. It was a heartwarming homage to another of science fiction's most celebrated creations and apparently it went one step further in Steven Moffat's initial outline of the script. In reference to his new nickname, the Doctor originally responded, "Who likes Doctor Who? I've always preferred Star Trek", though the line was removed from the final draft. It was probably for the better, too. Whovians and Trekkies don't need another reason to hate each other and this would've probably ripped the stratospheres of their respective fandoms apart. Why can't everybody just get along?
