Doctor Who: Boom Review - 9 Ups & 3 Downs

Last but not least, we want to talk easter eggs, of which there were many this week. A tad self-indulgent of Moffat? Maybe. But he wrote the best episode of the last five years, so we'll let him off.

Firstly, this is not the first time Villengard has come up in-universe  Moffat wrote it into both his first and last scripts of NuWho. In The Empty Child, Jack Harkness reveals his Sonic Blaster was produced there, at which point Nine chastises him and claims responsibility for blowing up their munitions factory. In addition, Villengard's moon serves as the location for the Twelfth and First Doctors to track down Rusty the Dalek in Twice Upon A Time. Having Villengard finally crop up as a primary antagonist here is some great worldbuilding and a bit of a full-circle moment for Moffat.

The Anglican Marines are also a returning faction from the Moffat era, having had major roles to play at both the Crash of the Byzantium and the Battle of Demon's Run. In addition, we got: the Skye Boat Song, played by both the Second Doctor and the Master on the recorder; a reference to the Moon and The President's wife, a story told by Missy; and two little nods to Smith's Doctor with "Basically...", and of course, fish fingers and custard.

The latter was a cheap nostalgia shot, but we still took it hook, line and sinker. It was good to get our Moffat fix.
