Doctor Who Cast: Where Are They Now?
2. Matt Lucas - Nardole
In an exact repeat of Catherine Tate before him, Matt Lucas was originally intended to play a one-off character in a Christmas special, before returning for a full series as a companion. And also like Catherine Tate, there was initially some scepticism over whether he would prove a worthwhile addition to the TARDIS team.
By most Doctor Who fans standards he was. Nardole provided welcome comic relief for Series 10's darker moments, as well as proving to be a well-rounded character in his own right.
After leaving the show in 2017, Matt Lucas has gone back to being the comic household name that he was beforehand. He has cropped up in one-off roles across television and film, including critically acclaimed British comedy Stella, and served as a writer on Sacha Baron Cohen's satirical series Who is America?
He is perhaps best known now as a host on The Great British Bake Off, alongside Noel Fielding, having replaced Sandi Toksvig in the role earlier this year.
