Many jokes were made online following Peter Capaldi's casting as our favourite Time Lord, considering that his previously best-known role was that of foul-mouthed political adviser Malcolm Tucker in award-winning satire The Thick Of It.

Capaldi proved his range, however, by delivering a darker take on the Doctor that still makes him a favourite for many fans. He departed the show, along with showrunner Steven Moffat, in the 2017 Christmas special Twice Upon A Time.

Capaldi soon returned to his comic roots with his role in the two live-action Paddington films as Mr. Curry, the Brown's nosy neighbour who often acts as Paddington's nemesis. He also teamed up with The Thick of It creator Armando Ianucci once more for 2019's The Personal History of David Copperfield, an adaption of the classic Charles Dickens novel. Capaldi plays loveable conman Wilkins Micawber, who helps David Copperfield out throughout his life.

Capaldi is also poised to enter the DC Extended Universe as the Thinker, a supervillain with mind control abiilities, in James Gunn's upcoming The Suicide Squad, a soft reboot of the 2016 film.
