Doctor Who: Every 11th Doctor Episode Ranked Worse To Best

21. The Time Of The Doctor

Doctor Who Matt Smith
BBC Studios

To anyone that doubted Matt Smith, the twenty-something youngster at the time of casting, and his ability to play the Doctor, I would show them this episode. Not only does he get a lot to do, from slapstick comedy to emotional drama, he believably plays the Doctor as a frail old man who is world-weary and so tired of the war that surrounds him. And he was only 30-years-old.

However, the big epic regeneration moments with the reappearance of the Doctor’s worst enemies feel flat compared to the smaller moments. Whether this be the Doctor's emotional speeches or the moment when Clara asks the Time Lords to give him another regeneration cycle. And because she asks so politely they do so.

This also boasts one of the best regeneration scenes where we flick abruptly from an emotional Matt Smith who you can tell is genuinely saddened to leave to a confused and frantic Peter Capaldi. And the best line is left till last as Capaldi roams around the TARDIS before asking Clara “just one question: how do you fly this thing?”
