Doctor Who: Every 11th Doctor Episode Ranked Worse To Best

7. The God Complex

Doctor Who Matt Smith
BBC

The God Complex deals with an issue which has not really been explored in the show: faith. While this sounds like a rather dry theme to explore, The God Complex explores it inventively with a labyrinth of hotel rooms and a Minotaur roaming around.

As the guests of the hotel find their worst nightmare behind one of these doors, a brilliant idea, the Minotaur is drawn to them and feeds off their attempt to fall back on their faith. Brilliantly directed and beautifully written, this feels like it could well have been an interesting independent film too which speaks volumes.

This is also the episode where Amy grows up the most as her faith in the Doctor is destroyed, as he manipulates her, and she learns to stand on her two feet. This moving ending where the Ponds bid farewell is only ruined by their reappearance for another half a series.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
