Doctor Who: Every 11th Doctor Episode Ranked Worse To Best

4. The Impossible Astronaut/Day Of The Moon

Doctor Who Matt Smith
BBC Studios

In terms of ambition this stellar 90 minutes of Doctor Who knows no limits. Set to the backdrop of the 1969 moon landing, the Doctor and co visit President Richard Nixon at the White House, team up with the FBI and battle an enemy they cannot even remember: the Silence.

If this wasn't enough, the advertisements around this story features pictures of River Song, Rory, the Doctor and Amy accompanied by the chilling caption 'one of them will die'. Little did we know Moffat would be bold enough to kill off the main character! This perfectly set up the mystery of the season: how is the Doctor going to survive this seemingly unavoidable fate at Lake Silencio, Utah?

While this two-parter initially seemed like an attempt to franchise the show to the American market, it was actually a chance to see the TARDIS team tackle an incredible epic journey across this vast country while remaining incredibly British.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
