Doctor Who: Every 11th Doctor Episode Ranked Worse To Best

3. The Doctor's Wife

Doctor Who Matt Smith

The TARDIS is a woman. This idea must have been floating around the show in its 55-year history but chances are it wasn't attempted because it could go so incredibly wrong. However, somehow against all odds Neil Gaiman managed to pull off this crazy yet brilliant idea seamlessly.

With the right amount of humour and heart, Idris (Surrane Jones perfectly cast as the human embodiment of the TARDIS) instantly joined a lengthy list of fan favourite characters. She's mad one moment as she tries to bite the Doctor and heartfelt the next as she describes being alive as "sad when it's over".

We are treated to some revelations such as the fact the TARDIS always takes the Doctor to where he needs to be and that the Doctor calls his time machine "sexy" when no one else is around. Not sure we needed, or wanted, to know the last one. The decision to focus on the remarkable chemistry between Idris and the Doctor makes this episode work even if Amy and Rory are brushed aside as they battle the brilliant voice of Michael Sheen as House.
