Doctor Who: Every Doctor Ranked From Worst To Best

15. The Sixth Doctor (Colin Baker)

Now this is an interesting entry, as Colin Baker's Sixth Doctor is the incarnation that has benefitted the most from the years that have passed since his tenure.

Baker arrived during a very heated period in Who history, as the BBC controller at the time, Michael Grade, hated the show and wanted it axed. This led to a long hiatus, which obviously didn't help matters. The writing was changed up as well, making Six a more arrogant Doctor, with the aim being to soften him up over time.

From choking his companion Peri, to casually joking over the brutal demise of guards in a pool of acid, it was very hard to like this incarnation from the off. The show would be renewed again by Grade, but only if Baker was fired. Subsequently, Baker refused to film his own regeneration scene. Sylvester McCoy's first appearance in Doctor Who was actually playing the dying Sixth Doctor, trussed up with a blonde wig.

However, as the years have passed, Baker's continued work with Big Finish has given the Sixth Doctor a new lease on life. He also appeared in the special Dimensions in Time, and recently popped up in The Power of the Doctor, where he received a very warm reception. It was great to see him back in the role.

While his original run was marred with controversy, nostalgia has certainly helped to elevate this incarnation in the eyes of fans.
