Doctor Who: EVERY NuWho Villain And Monster Ranked Worst To Best

15. Cybermen

Doctor Who villains
BBC

The first of the Unholy Trinity of the Doctor's longstanding enemies.

The Cybermen were suitably upgraded for the NuWho era but up until the Series 10 & 12 finales, the overall storylines never quite reached the epic heights of the Daleks or Master episodes. In fact, the all-stomping robot-looking Cybermen design was rather to its detriment - they come across less as converted human beings and more like your run-of-the-mill rampaging robots.

Their reputation took hits to their armour now and again, especially when Dalek Sec hilariously owns the Cyber Leader during Series 2's Doomsday by categorically stating that they would destroy five million Cybermen with one Dalek and that they are "better at dying".

Nevertheless, the Cybermen's true menacing factor is in what they represent; and not about the deletion sprees. It's about the horrifying moment we see the chopping and sawing mechanism whirl into action at the Battersea upgrading plant; it's when poor Sally Phelan's emotional inhibitor is broken revealing her terrible anguish; it's seeing poor Danny Pink take off his faceplate to reveal himself to Clara; it's about hearing "Pain. Pain. Pain" from the 'special patients' and look of wide-eyed terror in Bill Potts in the conversion theatre as she awaits a fate worse than death.

These are the true horrors of the Cybermen. That, and the Lone Cyberman, Ashad, hunting down and purging any remaining humans, but more on that sadistic cyborg later.
